/ / Engineering

Trail shoes have followed road shoes into high stacks, and the result is a shoe that is stable on tarmac and vague on a hillside. Groundform runs a 28mm stack with a 0.8mm nylon rock plate close to the foot, so you feel the terrain and are protected from it — those are not the same thing and most designs sacrifice the first to achieve the second. The lugs are 4.5mm on a directional pattern, softer rubber at 62 Shore A on the outer edges for wet rock and harder at 70 through the centre where wear happens. The upper drains rather than resists, because a waterproof trail shoe that fills up stays full.

  • Fit: true to size

The dual-compound outsole is not marketing. Wet limestone that I normally walk down, I ran down.

  • Fit: true to size

Low and connected. If you have been running high-stack trail shoes this will feel alarming for a week.

  • Fit: runs small

Drains superbly. Runs about a half size small in the toe box for me.
